Lack of Self-Love Could Be Ruining Your Health

If you constantly feel bad about yourself and compare yourself to others too frequently, your health could be endangered. A large study conducted by the MacArthur Foundation discovered that self-esteem has a lot to do with health and longevity, and that people who love themselves get to live healthier and longer lives than those who lack self-love.

The fact is that you are your worst enemy. Nobody can treat you as bad or as good as you can treat yourself, and we all sometimes tend to be too critical of our actions, appearance and behavior. Feeling like you’re not good enough, and not loving yourself like you should, brings dissatisfaction, sadness, and sometimes even depression. Many people don’t even realize that by being their own worst critic and not loving themselves, they could be ruining their health.

Lack of self-love and low self-esteem can lead to mental health problems.  If you constantly think that you’ll fail at everything you do and that you’re not good enough for something or someone, you’re only holding yourself back and preventing yourself from succeeding in life. Thinking that way can lead to anxiety and depression, mental problems that are very difficult to deal with. But besides depression and anxiety, lack of self-love can also prevent you from being completely functional. For instance, it can prevent you from doing new things, such as starting a new job or hobby. This directly leads to missing out on opportunities, continuing to live the same depressed life and getting more and more frustrated.

According to physician, author and award-winning television host Dr. David Lipschitz, “Low se lf-esteem often contributes to dysfunctional relationships and destructive behaviors. In extreme cases, people with low self-esteem do not take care of themselves, have few friends and are often alone.” He also states that self-esteem can be affected by a bad relationship, a history of physical or emotional abuse, difficult work environment as well as loss of trust, and whatever lack of self-love is caused by, it can have serious consequences for a person’s health.

People who don’t care about themselves and have low self-esteem tend to suffer from nutritional disorders, such as morbid obesity, anorexia nervosa and bulimia. Although nutritional disorders are a serious matter, there are even worse things linked with lack of self-love. Because it commonly leads to depression, it can significantly increase the risk of addictive behaviors, including alcoholism, drug addiction and gambling. Promiscuous people and people who engage in criminal behavior are usually those who lack self-love. Several behavior specialists also believe that low self-esteem can increase the risk of life-threatening disease, and like most behavior disorders it has symptoms and consequences that could prove fatal, whether they are physical or mental.

Lack of self-love can have many consequences, and it can even affect your aging process (makes you look older than you really are). All kinds of people, regardless of age, sex, ethnicity and economic status, can have low self-esteem. It is a serious problem which can cause numerous health consequences as well as destroy your social and business life.

Self-love, however, can be practiced by learning to love your body and every aspect of you. You don’t have to be a narcissist to love yourself, and a healthy dose of self-love is something we all need in order to function properly and live a happy and healthy life. If you lack self-love and you’ve seen that it affects all the aspects of your life, it’s time to turn things around and learn to love yourself and treat yourself well.

You should be grateful for who you are, love your body and personality. Be grateful to yourself and for all the experiences you’ve had that have made you who you are now. In whatever situation you’re currently in, you can turn things around and create a better living environment for yourself. Start taking better care of your body – eat well, engage in physical activity, treat yourself with an occasional massage or spend time doing the things you enjoy. It is important to stop comparing yourself with others and start improving yourself to become the best version of YOU, and not better than someone else. You are only human, and you cannot be perfect – but you can be great if you only let go of self-judgment, self-hate and the feeling of being unworthy and start caring about yourself and treating yourself right.

In order for other people to love you and want to be around you, you need to first love yourself and enjoy your own company. Once you’re comfortable with being you, and you stop wanting someone else’s life, you’ll see improvements in your mental and physical health, as well as your social and business relationships.
