28 Shocking Medical Mistakes
When going to see a doctor or undergoing a procedure, you trust that you will be well taken care of, but even the best medical workers can make mistakes. Mistakes happen every day, and according to CNN, medical mistakes are the cause of more than a quarter million deaths in the U.S. each year, and they seriously injure millions.
When you consider it all, it turns out that, according to an anesthesiologist and critical care physician at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Dr. Peter Pronovost, medical mistakes are the 3th leading cause of death in the U.S.
Here are 28 shocking medical mistakes that can really scare the hell out of anyone.
1. Patient Waking Up During Surgery
A surgical patient, Carol Weihrer underwent a surgery in 1998 in a hospital in Virginia and woke up in the middle of the procedure. “I could hear the surgeon telling his trainee to ‘cut deeper into the eye’” she said for CNN later, remembering this horrible event. She tried to move and scream but she couldn’t, and she didn’t feel any pain during the surgery but she was completely awake and aware of what was happening. The patient has been dealing with post-traumatic disorder ever since the surgery.
This accident is called ‘accidental awareness during general anesthesia’, and according to a study published in Anesthesia, this sort of thing happens frequently and among the three million patients who underwent surgery in the UK and Ireland, one in 19.600 woke up during the procedure. Other studies conducted in the U.S. show that these cases happen more frequently, in one out of 1,000 patients.
This happens when the dose of anesthesia is not sufficient. But since paralytics are also used to prevent the patients from moving during the surgery, when a patient wakes up, they are unable to let the doctors know. And to make things worse, the doctors usually don’t know that the patient was conscious during surgery, as there are no reliable methods of assessing the consciousness of paralyzed patients.
