Powdered Eggs and 6 Other Fake Foods Being Served to Us
2. Crab Meat
You think crab meat is in your California roll? Think again.
While you think you’re eating something exotic and sophisticated, enjoying your roll and the perfect balance of favors coming from crab, avocado and seaweed, there’s something you should know – that roll doesn’t even contain crab meat in traces.
The pieces of meat you are eating didn’t come from the bottom of the sea, as you may have expected, and they are actually an imitation of crab meat. This imitation is a seafood paste called surimi, processed, frozen and made into flakes to finally be ground and mixed with egg whites and starch.
Of course, to be commercialized as crab meat, it has to taste like crab, doesn’t it?
Well, that is what artificial flavorings are for. And the color? The producers add some orange food coloring to make this ‘food’ look like crab. Basically, the whole thing is a fake product packed with artificial ingredients. As far as nutrition is concerned, the imitation has approximately the same number of calories, slightly less fat and sodium, much more carbohydrates and sugar, and significantly less protein and potassium.
There is nothing wrong in enjoying the imitation once in a while, but you should at least be aware of what you’re eating and not be cheated.
