It has always been believed that fats in general are harmful for our bodies. This information, however, is not true. Fats are a necessary element to complete our body’s internal functions. There two types of fats that can be found in the foods that we eat. It is up to us to educate ourselves on what to eat to keep ourselves healthy. We cannot simply avoid fats completely. What we need to do is to know the good and bad fats and the differences on how they can affect our bodies.


What are LDL and HDL? LDL is low-density lipoprotein and HDL is high-density lipoprotein. Low-density lipoproteins are fats more commonly found on animal food products while you can find high-density lipoproteins from vegetables, fruits and fishes. LDL is a kind of fat produced when food products undergo chemical changes to make it tastier or last longer. HDLs on the other hand are natural occurring fats.



Based on the information above, you can actually conclude that LDL is bad for your body compared to HDL. As we all know, anything natural is healthy. If there’s an increased level of LDL in our bodies, it can cause heart diseases. LDL gets trapped in the arteries which make it harder for the blood to flow freely, thus making our hearts work harder. If there’s difficulty or obstacles in the blood flow, nutrients and vitamins necessary for our internal organs are not distributed well. HDL works in an entirely different way, it neutralizes the effects of LDL in our body and helps reduce excess amounts of LDL.

Food Choices

Most of the foods that we eat regularly contain fat. It is our responsibility to monitor and make sure that we are within the required levels of our body. Foods like butter, cakes, donuts, fries are full of LDL because of the oil used in making them. LDL is also found in most meat products like pork and beef. If you think that you’ve been ingesting too much LDL, make sure that you balance everything by eating high-fiber fruits, whole grain bread, vegetables and fishes. These foods are great sources of HDL that can remove excessive LDL in our bodies.

What to Do

To start with, have your blood tested for LDL and HDL. Your doctor will explain to you the results of the test and will recommend a diet to keep you healthy. If you have abnormally high LDL levels in your body, you can also exercise to boost the HDL levels. Exercising helps to keep your body healthy and stimulates blood flow. Avoid smoking or drinking too much caffeine as these two can make matters worse for your heart.


The rule of thumb here is that anything in excess is bad for our bodies. Extremely low fat content in our body is just as harmful as high levels of LDL. Learn to do everything in moderation. Keeping an active lifestyle and constantly monitoring what goes into your mouth will help you lead a healthy and fruitful life.
