How Drinking Coffee on an Empty Stomach Affects Your Body

By  |

Most adult Americans reach for a cup of coffee before having something to eat in the morning. Good coffee is a good source of antioxidants, and it can be beneficial for your health if drunk in moderation, but you should not drink it before you’ve had breakfast. Coffee can curb hunger, and if you drink it on an empty stomach, you probably don’t even feel like eating after finishing with your coffee. Coffee also increases you energy levels and can help you stay awake on days when you really need something to lift your energy levels and mood up. However, drinking coffee on an empty stomach can cause serious negative consequences for your body.

Drinking coffee on an empty stomach increases the levels of stomach acids, which can cause heartburn and indigestion. But that can happen if you drink coffee that way once or twice. On the other hand, if you made it a habit to drink coffee before even thinking about breakfast most mornings, you are at risk of stomach ulcers, heartburn, irritable bowel syndrome and acid reflux. Moreover, cheaper and those coffees of lower quality tend to be more acidic, which means that they pose a more serious threat on an empty stomach. In order to avoid these issues, you should always choose quality coffee over cheap one, drink it in moderate amounts, and never before you’ve had something to eat.

Drinking lots of coffee during the day can increase the levels of anxiety and stress you experience, and that’s when you’ve eaten properly. If you eat nothing and have a cup of coffee, the problems you’ll experience are even worse. Have some food before you reach for your loving cup of coffee, as food will have a calming effect on your nerves and coffee won’t have such a negative impact. At least eat something and drink coffee at the same time if you don’t have time to slowly and properly do both, but never choose coffee over food in the morning. Also, coffee is known to interfere with GABA metabolism, which is the metabolism of a neurotransmitter that regulates mood and stress levels. Drinking lots of coffee, especially in the morning and before breakfast can affect both your digestive and nervous system.

The main reason why coffee on an empty stomach causes anxiety and stress is because caffeine can cause hormone imbalances. Having coffee before breakfast means letting caffeine disrupt serotonin production, a hormone that makes us feel happy and well. Once a person stops drinking coffee early in the morning and limits its overall consumption, they realize that their mood has gone up significantly. That happens because when there is not too much caffeine in the body, it can produce normal doses of the mentioned hormone. Drinking coffee at any time of day can cause hormonal imbalance, but having it on an empty stomach leads to the most serious consequences.

Many people can’t imagine starting their day without their favorite coffee, and they simply don’t want to hear about all the consequences they could experience due to their addiction or love towards this drink. If you’ve felt coffee jitters or noticed that your digestive or hormone system is out of balance, try to make some small changes when it comes to coffee. Eat at least a few bites of food before drinking anything caffeinated. Also, it’s always better to pay a little extra money in order to get a really good coffee than to spend as little money as possible, and ending up with a low quality product. Finally, try to drink at least one cup of coffee less per day, and you’ll decrease the risk of experiencing the symptoms of the aforementioned conditions, as well as improve the health of your digestive system. It’s easy to get addicted to coffee, but use some common sense when consuming it and make sure you don’t overdo it and you have eaten something before you take a cup into your hands.
